My Marine

I had awoken before dawn,
Knowing I would soon see him on the arriving train.
The dark grey, gloomy skies,
Made the morning air feel quite plain.
Months had gone by,
With only his letter to keep me company.
It was a sad day,
The day I gave him up reluctantly.
War changes everything,
So I had learned.
But it was just moments before,
His long awaited return.
In one moment the light was dull,
And in the next, simple as it was, he was there.
All the past days, months and years,
Had led me to this moment.
I could hardly picture it,
Parts of my heart were no longer broken.
One step at a time,
I made a step towards his soul,
And him towards mine.
The joy filled my being,
Thank the gods for answering my nightly plea.
Knowing that he was now safe,
And also knowing that he would never leave me.
War had indeed changed a lot in the world around,
But our love was something that would never be drowned.
